Our production company name for our thriller is T.E.F.T.  We have decided that the music to accompany this would be music from mobygratis.com. We decided that the music we are going to use was going to be titled "not sensitive". Below are the screen shots of us requesting a license for this music.

The script for Mistaken Identity

Settings - There are two locations which get used for the opening of the thriller. The first location is a shed, to portray the home/room of the antagonist, where he is planning what to do, it is a small, dim lighted room to portray that he is then antagonist.

 The second location is a park where rest of the thriller opening takes place, and where the identity switch occurs. our particular part of the park where the filming will take place is like an elegant garden, there is a clear path where the look-a-like and boyfriend have there scene and where the look-a-like gets attacked by the antagonist. There are many places for the antagonist to hide and when filmed in the dark, it looks more dangerous and brings the suspense to a climax, makes the audience wonder what will happen, will she survive or die?

Characters - For the protagonist and the look-a-like (Ellie and Tina) the red jacket is symbolic because that is what distinguishes them as who they are therefore there is mistaken identity. Both characters are similar tall with long straight blonde hair, from behind they as the same person however the reality is they are not.

 For the antagonist (Ahmet) the item which distinguishes him is the ring which he is always wearing. He also wears a hood, which enforces a stereotype of all those who wear hoods are troublemakers. The boyfriend of the look-a-like (Fahad) is just an extra within the film however it is vital to have him, to drive the story forward.

Yesterday our group decided that we was going to film. However, due to unseen circumstances we were unable to do so. This therefore meant, we have scheduled our filming to be done on a later date. 

Camera Movements

There are many different camera movements which are used in films these are: Tracking Shot- This is used when the camera is following someone walking or an abject such as trains, Steady-cam - This is when the camera is worn by the camera man and he/she films while chasing or following someone. This is used when the tracks cannot be put down due to mud or icy snow, Panning Shot - This is where the camera moves slowly across from side to side on a fixed axis, Tilt Shot- This is where the camera moves up and down on a fixed axis, Crane Shot - This is when the camera is mounted on a crane, and moves around at a distance above the ground level and lastly Rolling Shot - This shot is where the camera moves diagonally making the image askew (Often used to suggest character is drunk or ill.

Film Language and Camera Angles

Every camera angle is used for different shots and all give different effects on the character or actors in the film. Extreme Close up - This shows something very particular, Close up - This shows some ones facial expressions or a close up of a particular thing, Medium Shot - This shot usually shows half of someone or a body, Long Shot- This show can show the whole of someone or a place , Establishing shot - This shot is used at the beginning of films to show the place where the film is set High angle - This angle shows a person looking very powerful and strong , Low Angle - This angle is used to show someone vulnerable and weak , Shot Reverse Shot- This shot is used when the camera moves from behind one person to the other and its usually used to show a conversation , Pointy of View Shot - This shot is used for the audience to be able to see through the eyes of one of the characters that is talking or watching someone.

Editing

Is used which is used in film when you look at the footage you have filmed and cut it down  and put it into order to create a film you can also changing things or adding any special effects. There are five different types of editing these are:  A straight cut, fade out. Dissolve, Wipe Cut and Jump Cut.  When editing a film there are two areas to concentrate on: Speed of Editing: How long each shot lasts? And Style of Editing: how each shot is joined to the next?  The speed is important as it emphasis of what’s going on in the film especially when action is taking place.

Lighting

There are many different types of lighting used to create any film. The lighting is very important as it creates an atmosphere of the scene that the audience are watching and it helps set the mood of the film. There are six different types of light which we have looked at these are: Key Light : This light is usually the brightest and the most influential , Back Light : This light helps counteract the effect of the key light, making the object/character look more rounded, Filler Light : This light helps to soften the harsh shadows that the use of the key and back lights create, Under lighting: This is when the main source of light comes from below the person/subject. This gives a distorting effect on character or object and is usually used in horror films, Top Lighting: This is when the light comes from above and it’s usually used to highlight the features of a character usually used to glamorize the main characters or the stars and lastly Back Lighting: This light is behind the character. If little or no other lighting is used with this lighting a silhouette is created. Usually used in horror films because the director wants to keep the characters identity hidden form the audience. 

Sound

Sound plays a big part in films. Sound helps to create an atmosphere through the music it plays, it can create suspense or shock and carm scene an action scene etc. It helps audience to understand what is happening with the film though dialogue and helps characters express their emotions in the film through their tone. There are four types of sound:  Diegetic sound: This is sound which part of the film which we are watching is. This can be dialogue, music or sound effects which come from a source within the film. Whereas Non-diegetic sounds: This is sound which we do not recognize as part of the film such as a voice over or background music. This sound only the audience can hear the characters in the film are unaware of it. Parallel Sound: This is sound that the audience expect to hear with the image that they see on the screen. E.g. children playing in the beach the audience expect to hear laughing. Lastly Contrapuntal sound: This is sound that we hear but does not fit in with the image we see on the cinema screen.  The first film to be released with a soundtrack was "The Jazz Singer" released by the Warner in 1927. 

Mise En Scene

Mise En Scene, this is the French term meaning "what is put into the scene or frame". Overall there are five elements to consider in mise en scene: Settings and Props, Costume, hair and make-up, Facial Expressions and body language, Lighting and colour and Positioning of characters and objects within the frame.

In class we also watched the film The Ring , the film starts off with a scene of a young girl in her house by herself, when she is in her house weird things start to happen for example the fridge door opens and the TV turns on by its self.  The audience are unaware of what is happening and this creates suspense for the audience. Then the camera cuts to the girl running up stairs to find water on the floor as she walk to the room where it is coming from you the audience can feel the suspense building up and you are nervous and scared for her as you don’t know what will happen.  The music creates suspense the louder it gets. The girl proceeds to open the door she then scream and the camera cuts to a black screen. This opening is very effective as it creates suspense and has finished with a cliffhanger making the audience want to watch on.

This is not a thriller but it is a television program but it still has a good opening as it creates suspense in the beginning on the film Dexter is a television series. The opening is very effective as the audience imagine something else is happening when in fact he is just getting ready in the morning. The opening Begins with him waking up and killing a spider crawling on his arm. He then gets up and shaves. The audience see blood coming down the side of his face this creates suspense and tension as the audience don’t know what’s going to happen next.  When he is making breakfast the camera angles make it look like his cutting up someone’s body but in fact his only making his breakfast. This opening is very effective as the audience believe that this man is killing someone when in fact he is just getting ready in the morning and it creates suspense and shock for the audience because they don’t know what’s going to happen next.

Another film that we watched was panic room this is another effective thriller opening however it is different to the others because it doesn’t give away anything. The film starts of in New York city and the opening credits are in 3D this is effective because it engages the audience and they will want to watch on, in the film at the start there is no music it is quite but it still manages to create suspense then it suddenly gets louder and louder and this creates a warning for the audience as it prepares them for what is about to happen but they don’t know what it will be and this is the suspense in the film. The camera than cuts to a woman walking down the street. This is called cutting from the general to the particular.

The Brave One

The film the brave one starts off with a voice over of a lady whilst the camera moves around the city. The audience then see a lady walking down a street with a microphone trying to listen to any spirits. The audience know she is looking for this because the voice over talks about the dead and ghosts. Then the voice over lady with the "Street Walker". This is effective as the audience feel as they have been on a walk down the street from the camera.

The film in the cut starts off with the camera going in and out of focus, then the camera moves around which shows a poor city with a rubbish pile on the street, then it suddenly cuts and focuses into a flower which has been drawn onto the pavement with red paint, this could mean danger/violence/passion/love etc. as this is what the colour red represents. However the camera is filming the flower from behind a fence which may show that the poor people want to go to the bright colours and the flower but can’t because they are trapped in the past and in this rotten town, then again the film cuts to a woman walking around in the garden, when she is doing this a carm song is playing which shows peace and calmness however it gets louder and louder which may represent suspense and something bad is going to happen. This opening is effective because it shows to stereotypes about to different societies.

Music which we have chosen so far is 'A Nightmare in London' by Shredda, it is a non-copyright instrumental; we have an idea of using multiple instrumentals, for different parts of the thriller because in professional film this is what they do. SHAFT

Shaft

In 1971 the film shaft was released into the world of cinema, it was the first mainstream film of a black African American director and star. This film goes from the general to the particular, which is a when the protagonist comes out and the camera makes him look tall and powerful by using a low angle shot. The camera movement also shows he is powerful because he walks through all the cars/taxes and the streets of traffic and does not care. The titles which are used in Shaft are red which symbolises danger, blood and passion.

SEVEN

Seven

In class we watched the film seven this is because it has an effective title sequence which has influenced the audience why they have watched it. They are making visuals for their products; the film 'The Ring' has been influenced by 'Seven' we, the audience can see elements which are similar. It is a disturbing opening because of the scary sound and the way the font is presented. The font continuously flickers throughout the title scene which makes the audience scared and jump out of their seats , and this shows the audience what the rest of the film might be like and it get the audience excited and builds suspense.

For our thriller Mistaken identity, we had to come up with our own production company that will go at the start of the film, we decided to call it T.E.F.T Productions , this stands for ( Tajinder, Ellie, Florida, Tina Productions).

The BBFC

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) which was first called British Board of Film Censors is responsible for the national classification of films in the UK. This non-governmental organisation is funded by the film industry. Under the Video Recordings Act of 2010, the BBFC is expected to classify DVDs, videos and certain video games.

The BBFC also advise what cuts should be made in a film. Cuts are compulsory if what’s involved violates the Protection of Children Act (1978) or Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act (1937). Cuts can also be advised to make the film more appropriate for a wider audience. Also if distributors have asked for a certain certificate the BBFC may suggest cuts so that their film will fit the certificate they requested. 

Above are some of the certificates that the bbfc have put in place so everyone can watch films that are suitable for them.

For our thriller, Mistaken Identity, our target audience will be young adults; from 15 upwards and this is why is will be a fifteen certificate.

This is because there will be not be scenes that dwell on violent scenes, glamorising of weapons or dangerous imitable behaviour.

The music contrast between how wealthy and poor the people are in the film

Upper class people were wearing ball gowns, with their hair tied back and they had suits on and hats, showed they were rich and wealthy people, whereas the little boys playing in the street were muddy, wearing ripped clothes that were too big for them, some were homeless because they didn’t have a lot of money.

Uncle Charlie-money/rich/expensive/ cigar in hand/mart suit/laid back/relaxed doesn’t fit in with the people that live there. When the lady leaves, and pulls the blind down he comes to life like a vampire, capable of violence when he smashes up the glass. To men chase after him, but they lose him, waits and smokes a cigar, smart/cool/carm knows what his doing. Whereas the little girl lives in a happy/rich/carm/nice community. She is in the same position as him before on the bed. Shows she is like her Uncle Charlie but opposite as well

He murders widows for their money and the suspense of the film is whether or not Charlie will find out and if she does what is she going to do and is she in any danger?.

Analysis of past students work

This is one of the students work we watched from the previous year, it was really good as it has all the elements of a thriller, there was much dialogue and is captured the audience and they were in suspense because they didn’t know what was going to happen next which is important in a thriller.

Story- I’m walking through the park and the murder things I’m Ellie and when I’m alone he comes up behind me and stabbed me, he turns me around and runs away when he realises it’s not Ellie .

Music- when we have the flash back of Ellie and the murder we will have laughing and joking shows they were happy and when it’s me walking through the park alone it will be building the music up to create tension for what is about to happen.
